25/11: 90 YEARS -A SPECIAL CELEBRATION

We are pleased to announce the big event of the year for the band.

on Sunday 11th December there will be a mass at 12 noon in Blessed John Duns Scotus followed by the launch of our new tartan in the adjacent hall. The band will be presented with kilts in the new St Francis/Franciscan tartan and will perform in them for the first time. Its a wee bit of history.

It is open to all and in particular local people of the Gorbals area of all denominations and none. We'd also love to see as many former members in attendance.

Its a community celebration for the longest running musical group in the area. Its not many make it to 90 years after all!

Join us and support the band. Contact us for more details and also if you are looking to attend so that we know how many people to expect.

29/04: THE BAND- FILLED BY THE SPIRIT OF THE GORBALS!

The Bands 90th Anniversary year received an enormous boost having received an award of £10,000 towards its activities. Central to the award is support for a new redesigned uniforms. It is a massive boost to the band in this significant year and reaffirms the mutual support between the band and our local community.

The award allows the band to look to the coming years with greater confidence and is seen as an investment in the band by the local community which we believe secures the bands future for the foreseeable future.

We are trully grateful for all the support we have received from the local community and hope that we can continue to develop and contribute what we can for the people of the area. Over the next few months the new uniform will emerge as the more visible sign of the award but there will aso be an increase in our activities in other areas during the months and years ahead.

23/02: BAND WINS COOP COMMUNITY AWARD!

The band were successful in winning an award from the Coop Local Community Fund for 2016. In a three way vote with two other very worthy projects we managed to secure the most votes and with it our share of the fund which amounted to the not insignificant total of £2500!

This money will go directly towards our uniform renewal and equipment to sustain the band during the 90th Anniversary and beyond.

A huge thank you to all who voted for us and in particular to the staff of our local Coop who helped us by promoting the vote. Thanks also to all those in the Gorbals who gave us their vote. It means a lot to the band. We hope we can repay the trust shown in us. Thanks to such support we hope we can continue on towards our centenary!

19/01: Enrico - The Hang Man cometh!

A big thank you to Enrico Tonazzo over from Italy and learning the snare drum with the drummers, who brought along his Hang to give us a demonstration of this wonderfully relaxing sound.

Enrico performed a few of his own compositions which created a real chill out zone for the drummers! It was difficult to go back tae our own ratatat after that!

A welcome diversion for a bit of an evening and a sound which we may even look to incorporate in some way in a set of some sort.

28/12: The bells were jingling...

As were the collecting cans after another successful process around as much of the Gorbals as we can manage in the near three hours of japery and playing. It was a mild and dry day for us and a great turnout of band members and supporters added to the festive revellry. We are grateful once more to the generous people of the area for continuing to express their support for the band. Our total collected this year was a new record of just over £1000. Really amazing. We are sure to put this to good use in the coming anniversary year as we try to build on all the work we do locally. Thanks again and a Happy New Year to all when it comes.

25/11: Our very own St Andrews Ceilidh 20th November 2015

Our annual St Andrews Ceilidh was a another resounding success with a near full hall and a busy bar. The dance floor was busy almost from the start and the bands performance was very well received. The raffle was verging on the contraversial and the buffet went down a treat judging by the enpty servers and the lack of grub left for the band after playing! With opportunities for the punters to buy some of the home made tablet or win the  hand Knitted Piper then there was a lot packed into the evening. Our thanks go out to all who supported us in this successful evening including the John & Martin for running the bar and John Clancy at the Laurieston Bar for their continued support. Thanks to all and see you all again next year we hope.

Why Marking Time?

Marking Time is a blog and, as such, a record of matters relating to Saint Francis Pipe Band as it trundles its way towards its centenary. For those unfamiliar with the terminology 'Marking Time', it is what bands do when they march on the spot without moving. At times like that there is the chance to ponder on what has gone before and what is coming ahead. So this blog will be a point where we shall indeed be Marking Time.
